What is Fika?
Fika is a big part of Swedish culture, translated it means to have a cup of coffee or to have a break, however Fika is much more than that. Fika is the whole concept of stopping what you’re doing and taking a moment to relax and talk with friends and family. Life can be stressful sometimes and we believe it’s important to take a break, sit down and refresh your mind.
Many Swedes consider that it is essential to make time for Fika every day, so much so that big named companies in Sweden take time out of the working day to Fika. Often Fika is enjoyed by candlelight, it’s all about slowing down and finding time for friends and colleagues.
Fun fact: The word Fika originated from the 19th-century word kaffi (coffee) – during the history of Sweden coffee had been banned several times. Some Swedes didn’t follow the rules and had to come up with a secret word to meet for “kaffi”. To do this they simply switched the two syllables around.
kaffi → ffi-ka → fika
Who are Fika Candles?
Although Fika is traditionally apart of Swedish culture, Fika Candles are proud to be based in Yorkshire. Taking inspiration from Sweden, Harry and Jess the co-founders wanted to create a brand that truly reflects the importance of taking a minute to sit down, relax and share a moment with friends and family.
Sustainability and well-being are heavily grounded into the brand’s ethos, with Harry and Jess having a passion for fragrance and relaxation they wanted to create an environmentally friendly brand that reflects this.
Fika Candles are made with natural oils and soy wax, so they are non-toxic or harmful to the environment.
